Motorizing Window Coverings
Why Motorize?
Some obvious benefits are ease of operation at hard to reach
windows, eliminating child safety hazards and the practicality of push
button control. Many of us wake up each morning and go from window to
window reaching over furniture to open shades or draperies. Then at
the end of the day we go though the same thing again. By motorizing,
all the window coverings in a house can be opened or closed with a
single remote control. If you vacation a timer will raise and lower
them at set times just as if you were there.
Motorizing Options
Motorization integrates electrical products with window shades,
draperies, roll shutters, awnings and patio covers. Several types of
motorization are available including low voltage energy efficient
motors, battery powered motors and heavy duty motors for larger window
coverings. These are controlled by individual or group controls for
wall switches, remote controls, programmable timers or wind and sun
sensors. These can be integrated with home automation systems, TV
remotes, or your computer system. Then you can raise or lower your
window coverings with a long distance phone call. There are several
design solutions for soffits, hidden pockets and wiring. Another
customization option is the relatively new five year battery life
motors for roller shades. This can be one of the most practical
options because it eliminates the need for more costly electrical
renovations. Home lighting control systems, used to control artificial
light, can also be used to control natural light by adding motorized
window coverings.
Interior Shades
Sunscreen roller shades block the sun, not the view. These shades come
in over seventy styles that offer up to 97% sun protection while
retaining the view. Room darkening or light filtering roller shades,
with hundred’s of colors to choose from, offer privacy and light
control. Battery operated motorization is available for 1’’ or 2’’
blinds, vertical blinds, cellular shades and roller shades. Low voltage
motorization is used for draperies, cellular, pleated, roller and
grass shades, woven woods and sky light shades. For larger awnings,
roman shades and draperies heavy duty motors are available.
For exterior window coverings these same systems are used with the
addition of weather proof aluminum shade covers.
Conclusion
Since motorization has become more reliable and less expensive it has
joined home security, home theatre and other home automation products
in popularity.
